Spring cleaning tips

As the northern hemisphere is heading into summer, we thought we would provide some quick spring cleaning tips to help you get your house ready for summer.

  • Dusting: While is probably makes sense start at the top!!!
  • Grab all your tools in one trip (planning saves heaps of time)
  • Start in one corner of a room and work your way clockwise around.
  • Backing soda is your odor friend - leave it on carpets over night
  • Plan what you have to do and write it all down.
  • Use a wet cloth and a dry cloth - things come up well like this.
  • Heel marks - try pencil erasers
  • Be careful not to mix cleaners!!!
  • The most important tip: Allow your cleaners to set for a few minutes - don't be in a hurry to get them off as this helps clean better.
And enjoy your beautiful house in the summer!!!

A natural product to clean windows and mirrors

If you are like us, you are constantly cleaning with kids around. We have a five year old, a three year old and a 18 month old, so there is always some one around.

This poses some safety problems when using harsh chemicals. So wherever possible, we use natural products, so that our children and our environment is safe.

So today, we want to share with you our window and mirror cleaning recipe.

Simple add:
  • 1 and half cups of vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 8 drops of lemon juice

To easy!!! Your windows will be cleaned, the kids can even help. A further benefit is that the recipe stops the mirrors from fogging up, to some degree at least, as well. How about that!!!

So enjoy.

Cheers

Cleaning the toilet

Surely this must be one of the favourite areas of cleaning. What is there not to like? Strange smells, stains, for some reason the floor is sticky...oh, you say to yourself as you realise why the floor is sticky!!!

But don't despair. With a few minutes, a pair of strong rubble gloves and some optional breathing apparatus, you will have the toilet and bowl shining and glowing in no time.

First things first. You don't need to worry about all those harsh chemicals to get the toilet looking good. No sir re!!! Lets look at some of the basic equipment.

A good toilet brush

Some Baking soda

Milton

A cloth (make sure you only use it for the toilet)

Some orange juice, coke or vitamin C

If it is really bad you can resort to Jiff.

The process

We here, really love Milton, while it is Chlorine based it is stabilised and has been used for the last 40 years to sterilise bottles for babies - I think it has proven it is safe to use.

Using a spray bottle, spray diluted milton (a capful per bottle is enough) on the lid of the toilet and on the seat. Let it sit for a minute then whip it off.

To clean the bowl, through some orange juice or coke in the bottle - this reduces the stains and helps with controlling odors. Use the brush and swirl around.

Still not clean? Gee, when was the last time you cleaned your toilet!!! Resort to the Military style Jiff. That will teach those stains.

Conclusion

All in all, the toilet is really only a five minute job. Do it once or twice a week, and she will be looking good as new!!!

Dust Tips

From (www.gardensandhome.com)

Carpeting is probably the biggest offender as far as a dust collection is concerned. Replace carpeting with a hard floor surface like ceramic tile, linoleum, or hardwood floors.

Replace curtains with blinds. Today's wood and vinyl blinds no longer just shade the room and afford privacy. They come in a variety of decorative designs, colors, and materials.

Place zippered allergen covers over your box spring and mattress. Use only washable bedding. Forgo the decorative pillows. Wash sheets, blankets, clothing in water that is at least 130 degree Fahrenheit. Anything lower will not kill dust mites.

Replace upholstered furniture. Choose wooden furniture that is easy to wipe down and will withstand frequent cleanings.

If possible store clothing in another room. If you can't, consider storing clothing in plastic bags like the space bags that you suck the air out of.

Vacuum frequently with a strong vacuum equipped with a filter. Wipe down all surfaces frequently including walls, sills, door casings and floors.

Use an electrostatic or HEPA filter in the room. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services these type of filters can remove many allergens from the air.

--UV Eliminator Filter-Air filters protect the air your family breathes!--

The easiest way to keep up with a dust free room is to keep clutter to a minimum. The fewer things you have in the room to collect dust, the less you will need to dust. Just think of how much extra time you will have other things!
